MDFrame

Convert Markdown to Word

When the recipient needs to edit the content, a .docx is the right choice. MDFrame converts .md to Word in the browser, with no server and no Office installation.

Three steps

  1. Open the file in MDFrame, by dragging it in or pressing Ctrl + O.
  2. Press Ctrl + S, or click the download icon in the toolbar.
  3. Choose Word document (.docx). The file downloads straight away, named after the document: Report.md becomes Report.docx.

The whole conversion runs in JavaScript, in your browser. The .docx is assembled to the Office Open XML standard, which is a ZIP package holding XML files, so no Word and no account are involved.

What the export keeps

  • H1 through H6 become Word Heading styles, ready for an automatic table of contents.
  • Bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code and real clickable hyperlinks.
  • Bullet and numbered lists, including several nesting levels. Task items become ☑ and ☐.
  • Tables with a bold header row and borders.
  • Code blocks with a shaded background and Consolas, without odd line wrapping.
  • Images embedded in the file (PNG, JPEG, GIF), scaled down to the A4 content width when they are too wide.
  • Mermaid diagrams embedded as PNG images, re-rendered with the light theme at 2×, instead of leaving the source code in place.

Images need one extra step

Browsers cannot read your disk on their own. If the document references relative images such as ![](images/pic.png), press the folder button in the toolbar and pick the document's folder before exporting. Skip that and the images are left out.

Supported images embedded as data: or blob: URLs do not need folder permission.

HTTP(S) images are not downloaded or embedded by DOCX export, even after you select Load external images in the viewer. To include one, save a supported image locally and reference that local file. Mermaid image nodes or resource URLs require document consent before diagram rendering; HTML image labels remain disabled.

Opening and editing the result

Microsoft Word 2016 and later opens it directly, with no repair prompt. In Google Docs, use File → Open → Upload, or drag the file into Drive. LibreOffice Writer opens it as usual.

From there you can restyle it, add a cover page, insert an automatic table of contents or export a PDF. It behaves like any other Word document.

Limitations

This is a conversion, not a native Word file. Comments, tracked changes and your company's custom styles will not be there.

Wide tables shrink, so keep them under about six columns.

LaTeX math stays as text rather than becoming a Word equation.

Mermaid diagrams become images, so changing the picture means editing the source and exporting again.
